How do the math pre-tests work? How do students take the math pre-tests?

When your students first log in to Freckle and select Math, they will be taken to the domain selection page, which looks like this:

Any domains that do not have a box in the top right corner (with completed levels and questions answered) has not been started. That means students will need to take the diagnostic before they begin practicing in that domain.

The pre-test will start automatically the first time your students pick one of the domains shown. Each domain has its own pre-test, so the first time the student works on any domain, they will take one. This is important because a student who is great at number sense may not be great with fractions or vice versa. Once students click on a domain, the screen below will appear.

When students click on “Start Pre-Test”, they will be taken through a series of questions. As students get questions correct, the questions become more difficult. The program will work to isolate the perfect starting level for a student, based on what he or she already knows and/or still needs to work on. If you want to know whether a student is working in practice mode or pre-test mode, just look at the top right of his or her screen. If it says “Pre-test”, the student is completing the diagnostic for a particular domain.

Once the program has determined the perfect level for a particular student, it will end the pre-test and show the student a message like the one below.

After students click “Continue”, it will return them to that particular domain’s home screen, where they can elect to begin practicing at an appropriate level. Notice how the screen shows that the student was placed at Level 7. This is the level at which the student should begin practicing. Through the pre-test, the student has demonstrated that he or she has mastered all previous levels.

Some other things to note about the pre-test:

  • The length varies based on student capability. Some students will finish in 5 minutes, others may take as many as 30 minutes. It must be done in one sitting.

  • If the student quits before answering at least 10 questions, the pre-test won't count, and the student will have to start over.

  • The results for the pre-test go into the dashboard immediately. To see them, log in to your dashboard and select the Groups and Matrix report on the left. From there, pick the domain your students practiced and you can see where every student is in that domain.
If you ever feel that the results of the pre-test aren't accurate for a given student,  there are usually two reasons:
1. The students didn't know to try their hardest on the test, or they didn't have enough time to work on it.  (we recommend 30 minutes to be safe)
2. The students are generally at a high level, but have some gaps in their understanding. The pre-test stops the first time it finds a significant gap for a student, and has them start practice there.
In either case, it's not really a huge deal: when a student knows a topic well, they get moved on to the next concept very quickly during practice. This means that even if they're misplaced, they'll reach their level after just 3-4 sessions of trying hard! It's the beauty of an adaptive program :)
