How do you calculate time spent on Freckle?

In many of the reports available on the teacher dashboard, you'll notice that we list the amount of time a student spent practicing on Freckle. When monitoring the amount of time your students spent on Freckle, it's important to take the following into account.

1. We only include the time that students spend with a Freckle product open on an active working session.

Students might spend time clicking around the dashboard, going to the piggy store, looking at their badge library, etc. - the time spent doing those activities will not be included as time spent on Freckle. We do this on purpose to allow teachers to truly track the amount of time students spend working on the program.

Some students may also exit the Freckle program and go explore something else on their devices. When this occurs, we will not count that time spent on the computer as time spent on Freckle because they were not working on Freckle.

2. Most Freckle products support the tracking of time spent, but some do not.

Products that calculate time spent

  • Adaptive Math
  • Targeted Math
  • Math Assignments
  • Fact Practice
  • Number Facts
  • Math Benchmark Assessments
  • ELA Skills Practice
  • ELA Articles
  • ELA Stories
  • Word Study
  • Decodables
  • Sight Words
  • District Benchmark Assessments
  • Science Articles
  • Social Studies Articles
  • ELA/Science/Social Studies Writing

Products that do not calculate time spent

  • Inquiry-based lessons
  • ELA Benchmark Assessments
  • Vocabulary Review

This means that if your students spend 10 minutes on Vocabulary Review, inquiry-based lessons, or ELA Assessments, that 10 minutes will not appear as part of their total time spent on the various reports.

3. If students keep Freckle open during an active working session and go do something else on the computer, we will still calculate that as time spent on Freckle.

Unfortunately, we don't have complete insight into whether students are actively working on Freckle while a session is open. We use the best data available to calculate time spent, which in most cases is the length of time a session is open and/or how long it takes a student to answer a particular question or set of questions. For this reason, we recommend students remain focused while on Freckle. If they do have something else to take care of while on a device, they should log out of the Freckle session (and maybe the program itself) before doing so.
